Character counting in the word counting methodology
Keep word count rules consistent across revisions; compare character counting with the destination platform’s own definition.
Text is split at whitespace. Each fragment containing a letter or digit counts as a word.
Hyphenated words, contractions, numbers such as 3.14, URLs and email addresses each count as one.
Punctuation on its own does not count. A dash surrounded by spaces adds no words.
Chinese hanzi and Japanese kana count individually. One Latin word followed by two Chinese characters counts as three.
Korean, Arabic, Russian and Hindi are counted by whitespace-separated fragments, like English.
Do spaces and emoji count as characters?
Characters are UTF-16 code units, including spaces and line breaks. This is JavaScript’s string-length unit; an emoji can use more than one unit.
The total without spaces removes spaces, tabs and line breaks first.
Letters include Unicode alphabetic characters only, excluding digits, punctuation and whitespace.
How are reading and speaking times calculated?
The word counting methodology uses English reference rates for reading and speech; these are not universal rates for every language.
Reading time is word count divided by 238: the adult silent non-fiction reading average in Brysbaert’s 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies.
Speaking time divides by 130 words per minute. Interactive tools round up to whole minutes; conversion tables show one decimal. These English-language reference rates are not universal language norms.
How are words converted to pages?
The word counting methodology estimates pages from words per page. Check the final document to measure its actual page total.
The reference layout is 12pt Times New Roman on A4 or US Letter, with 2.54 cm (1 inch) margins.
Fonts, headings, images and paragraph spacing change the result. Follow your school or publisher’s requirements; these figures are estimates.
- Single spacing (1.0)~500 words / pages
- 1.5 spacing~333 words / pages
- Double spacing (2.0)~250 words / pages
- Handwritten~175 words / pages
Are documents uploaded for word counting?
Typed text, pasted text and opened files are analyzed in the browser. Their contents are not uploaded.
PDF, DOCX and TXT documents are first converted to plain text, then counted using the same rules.
PDF counting reads the text layer. Image-only scanned PDFs need optical character recognition; this tool does not perform OCR.
